Summary of review and consultation process
This review was scheduled as part of the scheduled BCITO review cycle. In 2003, BCITO was informed in feedback from industry that the level and structure of the Level 4 National Certificate in Floor and Wall Tiling [Ref: 0726] needed updating. BCITO was asked to investigate international trends and benchmarks, and report back. It was found that the current qualification contained practical skills only and that a knowledge component was required. At an industry working party meeting in 2004, it was decided that the best approach was to separate the knowledge aspect in a Level 2 qualification, which would be a prerequisite to the practical qualification at Level 4. The National Certificate in Floor and Wall Tiling (Introductory Skills) (Level 2) [Ref: 1182] was registered in August 2005.
The unit standards in the Level 4 National Certificate in Floor and Wall Tiling [Ref: 0726] have been reviewed to incorporate the required changes and to reflect current industry practice. The structure and content of the qualification is currently being reviewed.
Main changes resulting from the review
· Unit standard 6112 has been replaced by new unit standard 22023. The level has increased to Level 4 to reflect that a tiler is often working in isolation and totally unsupervised. The credits allocated have decreased to 12.
· Unit standard 6113 has been replaced by new unit standard 22024. The credit value has been reduced to 16.
· Unit standard 6114 has been replaced by two role-specific unit standards 22026 and 22027. With these unit standards, the level has increased to Level 4 to reflect that a tiler is often working in isolation and totally unsupervised. The new unit standards have an increase in credits allocated to reflect the increased range of products and systems available within the floor and wall tiling industry.
· Unit standard 6115 has been replaced by new unit standard 22028. The credit value has been reduced to 16.
· Unit standard 6116 has been replaced by new unit standard 22030. The credit value has been reduced to 12.
· Two new unit standards have been developed: 22025 and 22029.
· Changes have been made to special notes in all unit standards for consistency of style and definition.
· Elements, performance criteria, and range statements have been changed to meet the roles reflected in the titles, to improve assessability and for consistency of style within the batch.
· Changes have been made to the purpose statements to reflect the changes in content.
