Review of Veterinary Nursing qualification

National Certificate in Veterinary Nursing [Ref: 0221]

National Qualifications Services (NQS) has completed the review of the qualification listed above that was reviewed and re-registered in October 1999.

Date new versions published                        December 2005

In 2004, NQS, with the Animal Nursing and Technology (ANTECH) Board of the New Zealand Veterinary Association as its primary advisory body, initiated a review of the qualification in conjunction with a review of unit standards in the Animal Care and Handling subfield.  Version 7 of the qualification reflects the outcomes of the review of the standards, and responds to feedback from veterinarians that the previous version did not acknowledge the needs of veterinary practices that dealt with large animal patients.

A review panel met in February 2005 to consider the impact of the standards review, the feedback received from industry and training providers through email consultation, and a New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA) sponsored provider forum in February 2005.  Consultation drafts of the reviewed qualification were sent to:

·        ANTECH Board members and their industry networks, which include the NZVA and New Zealand Veterinary Nursing Association

·        Current providers of veterinary nursing qualifications

·        Anyone else who had expressed an interest when the review was initiated in 2004.

The review panel and the ANTECH Board considered all feedback received, and the Board endorsed the final version of the qualification at its meeting on 22 April 2005.

Main changes resulting from the review

The qualification was reviewed following a review of related Animal Care and Handling unit standards, and to increase its flexibility.

·        Standard 5170 was replaced by 21379 and along with standards 5202 and 5213 moved to Elective B.

·        Standards 5203, 5204,14377, and 21358 were added to Elective B.

·        Standards 1296, 3501, and 9677 are no longer specified but are included in the Interpersonal Communications domain in Elective C.

·        Standards 111 and 327 are no longer specified but are included in the Business Administration domains listed in Elective D, which also includes the domains of Generic Computing and Service Sector - Core Skills, and standard 11831.
