The Ministry of Education and the Secondary Education Group Assessment business unit of NZQA have completed a review of the achievement standards listed above that were registered in September 2002.

New Registration date                        January 2005

Date new versions published                        January 2005

Planned review date                        March 2007

Summary of review and consultation process

This review is part of the planned cycle of review that takes place after the first year of use of the achievement standards.

·        Initial feedback and comments were collated from teachers/schools, moderators, the National Assessment Panel (NAP), professional development facilitators, material developers, and other stakeholders.

·        This information was reviewed by subject experts and recommendations were made in March 2004.

·        The recommendations were sent out for wide consultation to schools in May 2004.

Main changes resulting from the review

The review process has resulted in the following modifications to the achievement standards.

Technology 2.1 and 2.2

·        The subject reference of each of AS90339-AS90344 and AS90346-AS90351 has been made context specific.

·        AS90339-AS90341, AS90343, AS90344, AS90346-AS90348, AS90350, AS90351 - amendments have been made to the achievement criteria of each with corresponding changes to the explanatory notes to clarify the intent of the standard.

·        AS90342, AS90349 - the title and the achievement criterion of each have been amended to improve fitness for purpose with corresponding changes to the explanatory notes to clarify the intent of the standard.

·        AS90338 and AS90339 have been categorised as review category D and are expiring.

Technology 2.3

·        AS90352 - the title and the achievement criteria have been amended to improve fitness for purpose and corresponding changes have been made to the explanatory notes to clarify the intent of the standard.

·        AS90353-AS90358 have been categorised as review category D and are expiring.

Technology 2.4

·        AS90359 has been replaced by AS90773, Examine how technological practice is influenced by responsibilities to the wider community.  The credit value is four.

Technology 2.5; Biotechnology 2.6, 2.7; Electronics and Control Technology 2.6, 2.7; Food Technology 2.6, 2.7; Information and Communication Technology 2.6, 2.7; Materials Technology 2.6, 2.7; Structures and Mechanisms 2.6

·        AS90360-AS90368, AS90371-AS90373 - the title and the achievement criteria of each have been amended to improve fitness for purpose and corresponding changes have been made to the explanatory notes to clarify the intent of the standard.  The credit value of each has increased from 3 to 4.

Technology 2.8

·        AS90369 has been categorised as review category D and is expiring.

Information and Communication Technology 2.9

·        AS90370 has been categorised as review category D and is expiring.

Externally assessed achievement standard 90369 (Category D review) and 90359 (Category C review) expired in December 2004.

Internally assessed achievement standards categorised as category D - 90338, 90345, 90353-90358, and 90370 - expire at the end of December 2005.

Impact on existing provider accreditations

None.

Impact on Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP)

AMAP 0226 has been updated to reflect the changes made to the achievement standards.

Impact on existing qualifications

None.

Impact of changes on NCEA Exclusions List

The exclusions list is not affected by this review.  Although AS90338 is a D category review, it is internally assessed and will therefore not expire until the end of 2005.  The Exclusions List will be updated to reflect the category D status of AS90338 for 2006 results.

Summary of main changes to achievement standards' Ids, classification, titles, levels, and credits

The following summary shows the changes made to the achievement standards as a result of the review.  All changes are in bold.  Recommended alternative standards (where there if no formal replacement) are in italics.

Key to review category

A

Dates changed, but no other changes are made - the replacement achievement standard carries the same Id and a new version number

B

Changes made, but the overall outcome remains the same - the replacement achievement standard carries the same Id and a new version number

C

Major changes that necessitate the registration of a replacement achievement standard with a new Id

D

Achievement standard will expire and not be replaced.  Alternative standards are provided in italics
