FIELD MĀORI
Review of Māori Performing Arts qualification
National Certificatein Māori Performing Arts (Performance) [Ref: 0701]
NZQA Māori Qualifications Services has completed the review of the qualification listed above that was registered in December 1999.
Date new version published January 2005
The National Certificate in Māori Performing Arts has been reviewed as a part of the Māori Qualifications Service review cycle.
The main purpose was to ensure that the qualification was still fit for purpose and to allow for the inclusion of new domains within the Māori Performing Arts subfield of Field Māori.
Whakaruruhau members and accredited providers were informed of the review and invited to provide feedback on the qualification.
A whakaruruhau hui was held at the Brentwood Hotel in Wellington on the 19August 2004, and the qualification was reviewed. A copy of the reviewed qualification was then sent to whakaruruhau members for feedback and endorsement.
This review report is a summary of the changes made to the qualification.
Main changes resulting from the review
A brief summary follows which gives an indication of the extent and nature of the changes made.
The purpose statement was amended to emphasise the range of skills that could be learnt through study towards this qualification, and also to make reference to the pathway offered by the National Diploma in Māori Performing Arts (Tutoring) (Level 6) [Ref: 1088] that was registered on the National Qualifications Framework after version 1 of this qualification was registered.
A special note was added to alert candidates to the reo Māori unit standards that are required prior to commencement of the qualification.
Unit standards 15019 and 15020 were replaced with unit standards 13359 and 13360, in the compulsory section, in order to emphasise the knowledge and use of waiata skills and performance as being fundamental in Māori Performing arts.
Unit standards 15019 and 15020 were moved to Elective A. This allows candidates to continue to study these elements should they elect to do so.
Credit total for the compulsory section increased from 30 to 42 credits; credit requirement for Elective A increased from 6-9 credits; and credit requirement for Elective B reduced from 30 to 15 credits. This maintained the total credit value of the qualification at 80 credits.
The Dance, Drama, Music and Performing Arts General subfields have been removed from Elective C and replaced with Māori Performing Arts domains developed since the registration of version 1 of this qualification: Mau Rākau, New Māori Dance, New Māori Music and Taonga Pūoro.
The General Education Māori subfield was also added to the Elective C options as the uptake of these unit standards is increasing, especially within Kura Kaupapa, Wharekura and other schools and they are considered relevant to the qualification.
Subfield Ngā Mahi a te Rēhia was removed from Elective C as there are better options now available within the new domains which are more closely linked to Māori Performing Arts.
The Prerequisite Diagram was reformatted to show all of the Reo Māori unit standards required to complete the qualification.
The level of the qualification was added to the title.
Transition
People currently working towards version 1 of this qualification may either complete the requirements for that version or transfer their results to this version of the qualification.
The last date to meet the requirements of version 1 of former qualification is 31 December 2007.
It is not intended that anyone be disadvantaged by this review, and the above arrangements have been designed for a smooth transition. However, anyone who feels they have been disadvantaged may appeal to:
