Summary of review and consultation process
The Reo Māori Unit Standards 7257-7272, 15484-15499 in the domains of Whakarongo, Kōrero, Pānui and Tuhituhi were reviewed as a part of the Māori Qualifications Service review cycle.
The main purpose was to see that the unit standards were still fit for purpose and applicable to current issues.
Whakaruruhau hui were held in Hamilton on the 19 October 2004, and the 25 January 2005, where the Reo Māori unit standards were discussed and reviewed.
Feedback had been received that greater emphasis should placed on the Kōrero and Whakarongo strands so that candidates were able to converse confidently and effectively. Because of this, the credit values of the unit standards in the domains of Kōrero and Whakarongo were increased so that the candidate was given more contact time in the learning environment. The Whakaruruhau also talked about a gradual progression in the workload as candidates moved through the levels in order to prepare them for study at the higher levels.
The usage of these unit standards had increased, with the Kōrero and Whakarongo unit standards showing the highest usage. Amongst the accredited providers, secondary schools were showing the highest usage.
This review report is a summary of the changes made to those unit standards.
Main changes resulting from the review
· Credit values were increased for all unit standards in levels 2 to 4, with more weighting placed on the unit standards in the domains of Kōrero and Whakarongo.
· Credit values were changed in levels 5 to 8. The credit values of the unit standards in the domains of Kōrero and Whakarongo were increased to 35. The credit values of the unit standards in the domains of Tuhituhi and Pānui were decreased to 25.
· The Tuhituhi and Pānui standards at levels 2 and 3 were increased to 5 and 7 credits respectively in order to ensure a gradual progression in workload as the candidates moved through the levels. The increase allowed for more time at each level, building on the students’ knowledge and skill capacity as they progressed through the levels.
· Changes to purpose statements and grammatical changes were also made where necessary.
· The prerequisite diagram was simplified.
