The Printing & Allied Industries Training Council has completed the review of the qualifications listed above that were registered in January 2004.

Date new versions published                                                      June 2005

Main changes resulting from the review

The review of these qualifications was part of an extensive review of industry requirements for the binding and finishing sector.  Generally the current programmes were regarded as being satisfactory, apart from in reel-fed binderies, where stand-alone folders were not always required, and it appeared there was a need for a more flexible programme.  For this reason it was agreed that the print finishing programmes be divided into two strands – Reel-fed and Sheet-fed.

In order to manage shared core requirements for level 3 binding and finishing programmes the level 3 qualifications were replaced with a new stranded qualification:

National Certificate in Printing (Binding and Finishing) (Level 3) with strands in Print Finishing Sheet-fed, Print Finishing Reel-fed, Folder Operator, Guillotine Operator, Hand Bookbinding and Machine Bookbinding [Ref: 1171]

A new qualification has also been developed to replace the National Certificate in Printing (Binding and Finishing: Print Finishing) (Level 4) [Ref: 0057]; to follow on from the strands in Print Finishing Sheet-fed and Print Finishing Reel-fed in the new level 3 certificate:

National Certificate in Printing (Binding and Finishing) (Level 4) with strands in Print Finishing Sheet-fed and Print Finishing Reel-fed [Ref: 1172]

The review process has resulted in the following changes to the qualifications.
