Summary of review and consultation process
Unit standards 16126-16132, 16136-16155 and 16209 in the subfield of Tikanga have been reviewed as a part of the Māori Qualifications Services review cycle.
The main purpose of the review was to see that the unit standards were still fit for purpose and applicable to current issues.
The ‘intention to review’ letter was sent out to whakaruruhau members and Tikanga providers informing them that a review of the Level 3-8 Tikanga unit standards in all domains was about to begin, and inviting expressions of interest and feedback on the unit standards.
It was decided to split the unit standards into three groups because of the large number of unit standards to be reviewed.
A whakaruruhau hui was held in Wellington on 6 and 7 of September 2004, and unit standards in the Tikanga subfield were reviewed.
This review report is a summary of the changes made to some of those unit standards.
Break up Unit Standards 16133, 16134 and 16135
It was decided to replace unit standards 16133-16135 with eight new unit standards because of the nature of the content of the unit standards. The replacement unit standards were endorsed at a Whakaruruhau hui in November, and have since been registered as unit standards 21433-21440 replacing unit standards 16133-16135. See review summary April 2005 at http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/framework/updates/summaries.do.
Further development work will be undertaken on unit standards 16156 and 16157 before they are re-registered.
This review report is a summary of the changes made to 28 other Tikanga unit standards.
Main changes resulting from the review
· Changes have been made to titles, elements and purpose statements to clarify requirements.
· Recommended entry requirements have been added to unit standards at level 4 and higher to ensure the learner has a suitable level of understanding of te reo Māori and tikanga in order to achieve success at the higher level.
· Due to a request from a number of providers, the credit values of these unit standards have been reviewed and increased to reflect the time needed in order for the learner to fully grasp the concepts within the unit standards.
· Definitions have been added to special notes where needed.
· Resource lists have been added or updated where appropriate.
Impact on existing provider accreditations
