Summary of review and consultation process

Representatives of the hypnotherapy sector called a meeting in July 2000 of all known hypnotherapy associations and schools in New Zealand, advertising publicly to ensure full coverage.  The meeting formed the Hypnotherapy Industry Advisory Group with representation of all 11 hypnotherapy organisations, and decided that a review of the existing NQF unit standards and qualification was required.  The review was conducted at the expense of the sector over several years.  NQS assisted with the later part of the process.

The unit standards have been reconstructed to better reflect the needs of the industry to train professional and competent hypnotherapy practitioners.  The existing qualification includes unit standards requiring knowledge and competency in physical examination, beyond what is appropriate for hypnotherapists.  The review of the qualification will follow this review, but in anticipation, a new unit standard was developed which combined knowledge from several Core Health unit standards limited to hypnotherapy requirements.

Main changes resulting from the review

·        Title changed in unit standards 14768-14774.

·        Level of unit standard 14770 decreased.

·        Credits increased in unit standards 14767, 14770, 14772, and 14773.

·        Special Notes revised to suit each specific unit standard.

·        Unit standard 14767, the only remaining level 7 Hypnotherapy unit standard, requires prerequisites of all other unit standards underlying hypnotherapy practice.

·        Entry information altered in 14770 and 14772 and deleted in 14774.

·        Elements and performance criteria reconstructed in most unit standards.

·        Unit standard 14768 emphasis altered to the gathering of information.

·        Unit standard 14772 emphasis altered to pain management.

·        Unit standard 14773 emphasis altered to teaching self-hypnosis.

·        Unit standard 14774 emphasis altered to demonstrating knowledge of stress management.

·        Performance criteria in 14767 and 14770 tightened to ensure a clearer practical standard.

·        New unit standard 21145 developed to cover medical knowledge relevant to hypnotherapy practice.
