Summary of review and consultation process
Following the development of new unit standards for die casting, unit standard 2372 Produce metal castings using pressure die casting machine, was reviewed to align with the redefined industry needs. The review and subsequent changes are consistent with the need for a higher level standard for die casting for die casting machine operators responsible for the safe operation of the machine and for quality maintenance. Industry consultation included companies using aluminium and zinc metal die casting processes.
The review process has resulted in the registration of a new unit standard reflecting the following changes:
· Two new elements relating to quality, fault finding and maintenance, have been added to reflect the greater complexity of the unit standard and for consistency with Unit 19741, Demonstrate knowledge of common die casting defects, and Unit 19742, Operate a pressure die casting machine under supervision, registered in December 2002.
· The level has increased from 2 to 3.
· The credit value has increased from 5 to 12.
· The purpose statement, entry information and special notes have been updated.
· Changes have been made to elements 1 and 2.
