Review of Telecommunications qualification

 

National Certificate in Telecommunications (Level 3) with strands in Bearer and Switch, Building and Data Cabling, Customer Access Network, Customer Premises Equipment, and Radio [Ref: 0767]

 

The ElectroTechnology Industry Training Organisation (ETITO) in conjunction with the Telecommunication Education and Skills Standards Organisation (TESSO) has reviewed the above qualification that was registered in August 2000.

The review of this qualification is planned to take place in                        2009

 

Reason for the review

 

The review was triggered by the industry's need for training in the area ofinformation and communications technology.  The review was conducted by ETITO in conjunction with TESSO and interested industry members.  This resulted in the development of two new unit standards covering Information and Communications Technology (ICT) - installation of ICT cabling and equipment, service and equipment expansion, and maintenance. These two unit standards have been included in a new strand within the qualification to allow for recognition of training in this area.

 

The qualification was updated with the details of revised unit standard 8191 and the inclusion of the updated subfield and domain of Electronic Engineering, Electronic Installation and Maintenance.

 

Unit standard 17151 was removed because it is no longer required by industry.

 

Main changes resulting from the review

 

This qualification was reviewed and issued as version 2.

 

Changes to structure and content

·        Addition of a sixth strand - Information and Communications Technology
New qualification title: National Certificate in Telecommunications (Level 3) with strands in Bearer and Switch, Building and Data Cabling, Customer Access Network, Customer Premises Equipment, Information and Communications, and Radio

·        Subfield and domain Electronics Technology, Core Electronics were updated to Electronic Engineering, Electronic Installation and Maintenance.

·        Details relating to unit standard 8191 and the resultant credit values for the core compulsory section were reduced from 31 to 29.

·        Unit standard 17151 was removed from the Customer Access Network strand because it is no longer required by industry, and the strand credit value was updated accordingly from 82 to 77.

·        Qualification credit value changed from 78-84 to 76-101.

 

Transition

 

People currently enrolled in programmes leading to the award of version 1 of this qualification may either complete that qualification or transfer to version 2.

 

For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the following expired unit standard will be exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement unit standard.

This exemption will apply until 31 December 2006, which is the last date to complete the requirements of version 1 of the qualification.
