Review of Seafood qualifications

The Seafood ITO has completed the review of the qualifications listed above that were registered in October 2001 and June 2002 respectively.
Date new versions published March 2005
The review of these qualifications was prompted after feedback from industry, training providers and assessors who had difficulties with the structure of the qualification in relation to meeting changing industry demands.
Main changes resulting from the review
· Changes to structure and removal of Generic and Vessel Operations strands.
· Addition of a third elective set with internal optional strands in Aquaculture, and Processing.
· Changes to credit requirements of elective sets.

Changes to structure and content
· Increase in the number of Core Elective 2 credits from 20 to 40 from anywhere on the NQF.
· Decrease in the number of Strand specific credits from 40 to 30 from the specified domain.
· Removal of the Vessel Operations strand as there are sufficient specific qualifications at level 3 in this sector to meet industry needs.
· Removal of Generic strand, and addition of Core Elective 3 with internal optional strands in Aquaculture and Processing.
· Change to title to reflect new structure.
Transition
All new trainees will be enrolled in training programmes leading to version 2 of the qualification. People currently enrolled in training programmes leading to an earlier version may either complete that version, or transfer to version 2. Alternatively, they may transfer to the National Certificate in Seafood Vessel Operations (Nautical Skills) [Ref: 1153] and/or the National Certificate in Seafood Vessel Operations (Fishing Technology) [Ref: 1152].
The last date for completing the requirements for version 1 of this qualification is December 2006.

Changes to structure and content
· Decrease in the number of Core Elective 1 credits from 30 to 20 from the Seafood or Seafood Māori subfields
· Increase in the number of Core Elective 2 credits from 40 to 60 from anywhere on the NQF.
· Decrease in the number of Strand Specific credits from 50 to 40 from the specified domain.
· Removal of Generic strand and addition of Core Elective 3 with internal optional strands in aquaculture and processing.
· Change to title to reflect new structure.

All new trainees will be enrolled in training programmes leading to version 3 of the qualification. People currently enrolled in training programmes leading to an earlier version may either complete that version, or transfer to version 3.
The last date for completing the requirements of version 1 and 2 of this qualification is December 2006.
