The Ministry of Education and the Secondary Education Group Assessment business unit of NZQA have completed a review of the achievement standards listed above that were registered in October 2003.

New Registration date                        November 2005

Date new versions published                        November 2005

Planned review date                        March 2008

Summary of review and consultation process

This review is part of the planned cycle of review that takes place after the first year of use of the achievement standards.

·        Initial feedback and comments were collated from teachers/schools, moderators, examiners, markers, material developers, and other stakeholders.

·        This information was reviewed by a subject expert panel and recommendations were made in March 2005.

·        The recommendations were sent out for full consultation to secondary schools, tertiary institutions, and others in the education sector, in April/May 2005.

·        Feedback from this full consultation has informed the changes described below.

Main changes resulting from the review

Visual Arts 3.1 - AS90515, AS90659, AS90660, AS90661, AS90662

Title and outcome statement

·        The title has changed from 'Research an art-making tradition and discuss its links to relevant recent (field eg design) practice' to 'Research and analyse approaches within established (field eg design) practice'.

·        The terms 'tradition' and 'relevant recent (field) practice' used in the title were seen as confusing.  Also, designers do not generally use the term 'tradition'.  The term 'established (field) practice' replaces 'relevant recent (field) practice'.

·        The term 'approaches' indicates the broad scope for topic selection.

·        The term 'links' was narrow and is replaced with 'relationships' in the outcome statement.

·        'Analyse' is added to title to strengthen the research focus for these achievement standards.

·        Reference to New Zealand contemporary practice and international practice is removed from the outcome statement to broaden the research options for students.  Contexts for research, including New Zealand contemporary practice and international practice, are referred to in the new Explanatory Note (EN) 3.

Credit Allocation

The number of credits is unchanged.  However, in response to feedback from consultation about student workload, the achievement criteria have been revised.

Achievement Criteria

Criterion 1

·        The term 'selected approaches' replaces 'art-making topic' to convey broad scope for student selection of what is to be researched.

·        The term 'established practice' replaces 'traditional' and 'recent', consistent with the title and outcome statement.

·        The term 'range' is removed from Achievement with Merit as increasing quantity does not denote higher performance.

·        'Range' has been removed from Achievement with Excellence and it now requires 'an in-depth analysis'.

Criterion 2

·        'Approaches' replaces 'tradition' consistent with outcome statement.

·        The concern about workload for this achievement standard has been addressed by removing the requirement for additional depth in this criterion.  It has been modified and is now the same for all three grades.  The practical investigation is part of the research, and Criterion 3 provides sufficient distinction between grades.

Criterion 3

·        'Identify', 'analyse', and 'critically analyse' are used to distinguish between the requirements for Achievement, Achievement with Merit, and Achievement with Excellence.

·        The stem 'using the research and practical investigation' has been removed because 'using the practical investigation' was seen as confusing.

·        'Relationships between selected approaches' replaces 'critically analyse...the links', and removes confusion.

·        Reference to 'selected tradition and relevant recent New Zealand and/or international practice' has been replaced with 'influences, methods and ideas' consistent with the outcome statement because 'links' was identified in consultation feedback as causing confusion.

Explanatory Notes

These have been reorganised with additional notes included to define terms used in the achievement standard.

·        EN 2 has been revised to allow students to select from a broader range of practices.  The reference to the work of contemporary Māori within the bicultural tradition is removed from the explanatory notes, taking into account the work of contemporary New Zealand artists includes the work of artists and designers who are Māori.

·        ENs 3, 4, 5, and 6 are new, which define 'approaches', 'relationships', 'analysis' and 'established practice'.

·        The EN for research, now EN 7, has been reworded to recognise the purpose of the practical investigation and students' own analysis and reflection on art works as part of the research process.  The bullet for 'practical investigation' has been made field specific to provide clear and appropriate guidance.

·        EN 8 is new and clarifies the types of evidence possible.

·        EN 10 is a revision of EN 5 in version 1.  Specific reference to 'original work' is removed and replaced with 'quality examples of work'.  This term is more appropriate to all five fields.

·        In general, references to 'art' or 'art works' are now inclusive of design practice.

Visual Arts 3.2 - AS90516, AS90663, AS90664, AS90665, AS90666

The titles, outcome statements, and credit value for these achievement standards remain the same.  Some changes have been made to the achievement criteria and explanatory notes.

Achievement Criteria

Criterion 1

·        'A particular form of art work' is removed from all grades, because it was seen as confusing.

·        For Achievement with Merit the term 'range' is removed as 'ideas and methods' provide sufficient distinction between the requirements for Achievement.

·        The criterion for Achievement with Excellence is reworded for clarity and 'options' is used to improve consistency between the requirements for Achievement with Merit and Achievement with Excellence.

·        The drawing study is made field specific (eg design) to clarify intent.

Criterion 2

·        Achievement and Achievement with Merit are unchanged.

·        'And' is changed to 'to' in Achievement with Excellence, this is to make it explicit that the requirement is to extend understanding through the process of synthesis.

Criterion 3 is unchanged.

Explanatory Notes (EN)

These have been reorganised with additional notes included to define terms used in the achievement standard.

·        ENs 2, 3, 4, and 6 are new and define 'processes', 'procedures', 'synthesise' and 'systematically'.

·        EN 5 is derived from material in EN 2 in version 1.

·        EN 7 outlines requirements for 'clarifying ideas'.

·        Information specific to the field (eg design) replaces previous information for all fields, which was included in each achievement standard.

·        The first bullet for 'sculpture drawing' in AS90666 changes 'will' to 'may', this is consistent with corresponding notes in the other Visual Art 3.2 achievement standards.

·        EN 8 the reference to the work of contemporary Māori within the bicultural tradition is removed, as the work of contemporary New Zealand artists includes the work of artists and designers who are Māori.

·        EN 9 is new; it clarifies the use of digital processes and has been added to be consistent with Digital Processes Guidelines published in 2004 by NZQA.

·        EN 10 changes are made to encourage a broadening of what constitutes 'ideas' rather than students basing development of own work on superficial references to artist models.  A note has been added to provide further explanation of term 'established practice', this is to emphasise ways in which students are expected to work with artists' exemplars, as opposed to copying.

Visual Arts 3.3 - AS90517, AS90667, AS90668, AS90669, AS90666, AS90670

Title and outcome statement

·        There are no changes to the title.

·        'Towards the production of original work' is added to the outcome statement and 'original' removed from the last line to avoid the implication that the whole body of work will be original.

Credit Allocation

·        In the consultation feedback, some respondents requested a reduction in the number of credits.  As there was no consistency among respondents on this issue the number of credits remains unchanged.  The panel view was that one year of assessment did not allow sufficient time in which to evaluate the need for changes to credit.  It was agreed that the credit allocation for this achievement standard is reconsidered during the next review cycle for these achievement standards.

Achievement Criteria

The following changes were made to better define the progression from Level 2, and to differentiate between criteria for Achievement, and Achievement with Merit.

Criterion 1

·        'A range of ideas' is removed from Achievement with Merit as 'options' provides sufficient distinction between the criteria for Achievement and Achievement with Merit.

Criterion 2

·        No changes have been made to this criterion.

Criterion 3

·        'Evaluating' is removed from Achievement as students may have developed a systematic approach sufficient to achieve the standard, but may not have evaluated ideas sufficiently to be awarded Achievement with Merit or Achievement with Excellence.

·        'Critical' is removed from Achievement with Merit, as it is a feature of Achievement with Excellence.

Criterion 4

·        The terms 'distinctive and innovative work' are removed from the criterion for Achievement with Excellence to provide a more realistic performance level.

Explanatory Notes

·        EN 2 notes have been made field specific.

·        EN 3 and 4 are new and define 'processes' and 'procedures'.

·        EN 5 (previously EN 4) has had a minor alteration to make it field specific.

·        EN 6 (previously EN 5) has been revised to provide an explanation of the requirements for Achievement with Excellence.

·        EN 7 (previously EN 6) is revised to clarify intent.  There is an improved definition of 'original work'.

·        EN 8 (previously EN 7) regarding the term 'critically relate' is reworded to better explain meaning.

·        EN 9 (previously EN 8) has been amended, consistent with changes to Visual Arts 3.2.

·        Previous EN 9 has been removed as previous explanatory notes have covered its intent.

Impact of changes on NCEA Exclusions List

None.
