The Agriculture Industry Training Organisation has completed the review of the unit standards listed above that were registered in July 2000, and October 2001.

Date new versions published                        October 2005

New comments by date                        October 2010

Expiry date of new versions of the unit standards                        December 2011

Summary of review and consultation process

The review was carried out because unit standards were due to expire, and changes were required to unit standards to reflect changes in industry practices.

Industry meetings were convened with representatives from pork industry sectors - indoor operations, outdoor operations, and finishing, as well as moderators and training advisors, to determine new, and verify existing, specific sector requirements.  Unit standards were checked during this process to determine whether they reflected industry requirements, and changes were made as required.  Particular consideration was given to the differences between indoor and outdoor operations, and whether separate unit standards were required for role holders in different sectors.

The change in domain name from Piggery Management to Pork Production Unit Management was recommended to reflect a change in industry terminology.

It was found that some unit standards contained both theory and practical requirements, and this has been a barrier to completion for some trainees.  The relevant unit standards have therefore been split into separate theory and practical unit standards.

There was also considerable overlap between unit standards and this has been addressed in the reviewed versions.

Unit standards were updated following sector meetings, checked through postal consultation and by conference call, and final changes were made prior to wider industry consultation.

Main changes resulting from the review

·          Standards in the domain Piggery Management were reclassified to the Pork Production Unit Management domain.

·          Credits and levels were considered, and adjustments made to ensure the level matched the requirements of the standard, and the credits reflected the time required to achieve competency and for assessment.

·          Titles were changed to reflect content.

·          New unit standards 22072 and 22090 were written.

·          Unit standards that contained both theory and practical elements were split into separate theory and practical unit standards.

·          Unit standards 15587 and 15588, and 15589 and 15590 were merged and replaced, as there was significant overlap in content between the two sets of unit standards.

·          Unit standards 4453, 4464, 4478, 4482, 15591, and 17160 were designated expiring as their content is covered in other unit standards and they are therefore no longer required.

Unit standards categorised as category C or D expire at the end of December 2007.

The Agriculture Industry Training Organisation has decided that the unit standards listed above, which were registered in July 2000, and October 2001, should have their period of registration extended.

The reason for the rollover and revision is that the unit standards have not been used sufficiently to warrant a review at this stage.

The unit standard in bold has been rolled over only as no revision was necessary.

In all other unit standards the following changes were made:

·        Legislation and Welfare Codes were updated.

·        Titles, elements, and performance criteria were revised to remove the term piggery and replace it with pork production unit to reflect the change in industry terminology.

·        Definitions were revised to be in line with other pork production unit standards, and terms adjusted in the relevant performance criteria.

The review of these unit standards is planned to take place during 2007.
