New Registration date                        September 2005

Date new versions published                        September 2005

Planned review date                        March 2008

Summary of review and consultation process

This review is part of the planned cycle of review that takes place after the first year of use of the achievement standards.

·        Initial feedback and comments were collated from teachers/schools, moderators, examiners, markers, material developers and other stakeholders.

·        This information was reviewed by a subject expert panel and recommendations were made in March 2005.

·        The recommendations were sent out for full consultation to secondary schools, tertiary institutions, and others in the education sector, in April/May 2005.

·        Feedback from this full consultation has informed the changes described below.

Main changes resulting from the review

All achievement standards

The explanatory notes have been altered so that the definitions are separated out into individual explanatory notes.  In some cases the order of explanatory notes has been altered.  Overall, these changes have lead to an increase in the number of explanatory notes.

AS90506 (3.1) and AS90507 (3.2)

·        Explanatory Notes

Explanatory Note 4: The wording 'error-free or almost entirely so' has been retained in recognition of the fact that the translation does not need to be perfect.  The wording is consistent with expectations of translation at excellence level, and with the wording of the equivalent standard at Level 2.

Explanatory Note 6: The final sentence of the version 1 Explanatory Note 3: 'Students will be expected to recognise additional structures that commonly appear in typical reading for this level (see AS90509 Latin 3.4)' has been deleted.  This removes both the reference to another standard and a statement that was inconsistent with the previous two sentences in the note.

Explanatory Note 7: The sentence 'The meaning will be given of any words from the prescribed list that have a radically different meaning in the passages' has been added to clarify this explanatory note.

AS90508 (3.3)

·        Title

A minor amendment has been made to the title with the deletion of the word 'a' so the title now reads: Translate and analyse familiar literary Latin passage(s) from Virgil.  This alteration has been also made to the introductory statement.

·        Criteria

The phrase 'give a detailed analysis..' in the second criterion for achievement with merit and 'Give a comprehensive analysis..' for achievement with excellence have been changed 'analyse in detail..' and 'analyse comprehensively..' for consistency with the same criterion at achievement.  This does not change the intent of the criteria.

·        Explanatory Notes

New explanatory notes have been added to give definitions of 'analyse', 'analyse in detail' and 'analyse comprehensively'.  Explanatory Note 9 has been amended as a result of these new explanatory notes.

AS90509 (3.4)

·        Criteria

The phrase 'by the authors' has been added to the criterion at each level, to align with the title and purpose statement.

The phrases 'give a detailed analysis..' in the second criterion for achievement with merit and 'give a comprehensive analysis..' for achievement with excellence have been changed to 'analyse in detail..' and 'analyse comprehensively…' for consistency with the same criterion at achievement.  This does not change the intent of the criteria.

·        Explanatory Notes

New explanatory notes have been added to give definitions of 'analyse', 'analyse in detail' and 'analyse comprehensively'.  Explanatory Note 6 has been amended as a result of these new explanatory notes.

Explanatory Note 3: The aspects 'context' and 'setting(s)' have been linked to read as 'context and/or setting(s)' and the phrase 'and/or attitude' has been added to 'author's intention', to ensure that an adequate breadth of the aspects at Level 3 were assessed.

AS90510 (3.5)

·        Title

The title has changed to: 'Relate familiar literary Latin passages to a wider context'.  The wording change clarifies the intent of the standard to explicitly link the literature to its wider context.

'Prepared' was changed to 'familiar', for consistency with other Level 3 and Level 2 achievement standards.

The introductory statement was amended to align with the title.

·        Criteria

Two criteria became one at each level of achievement.

The research is implicit in the criteria as reworded.

The adverbs used reflect the progression of skills expected for each level.

'Logical manner' has been removed from the criteria and placed within the explanatory notes.

·        Explanatory Notes

The previous definitions were edited to fit the new title and the new criteria.  Definitions for the terms 'analysing', 'analysing in detail' and 'analysing comprehensively' have been included as separate explanatory notes.

Impact on Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP)

None.

Impact on existing qualifications

None.

Impact of changes on NCEA Exclusions List

Exclusions have been removed for 90506 and 12262; and for 90507 and 12258.  An exclusion has been added for 90506 and 12258.
