The Ministry of Education and the Secondary Education Group Assessment business unit of NZQA have completed a review of the achievement standards listed above that were registered in November 2003.

Summary of review and consultation process

 

This review is part of the planned cycle of review that takes place after the first year of use of the achievement standards.

·        Initial feedback and comments were collated from teachers/schools, moderators, examiners, markers, material developers and other stakeholders.

·        This information was reviewed by a subject expert panel and recommendations were made in March 2005.

·        The recommendations were sent out for full consultation to secondary schools, tertiary institutions, and others in the education sector, in April/May 2005.

·        Feedback from this full consultation has informed the changes described below.

 

Main changes resulting from the review

The review process has resulted in the following modifications to the achievement standards.

 

AS90594 (3.1), Produce a dance for performance

·        Achievement criteria

The first achievement criterion (present a developed concept) has been changed to put more focus on the process of developing a concept and justifying design choices in relation to the choreographic intention.

The second achievement criterion has been changed at the achievement level to reflect the standard required at Level 3.

The third achievement criterion has been changed to focus on the whole dance work and the integration of the various aspects of the concept.

 

·        Explanatory notes

Explanatory Note 2 has been amended and a new explanatory note (Explanatory Note 3) added to clarify the requirements for the assessment of the first achievement criterion, present a developed concept.

Explanatory Note 4 has been combined within Explanatory Note 3, and has been amended to clarify the presentation requirements and the quality of the performance of the dance work.

A new explanatory note (Explanatory Note 5) has been added to define the term choreographic intention.

Explanatory Note 8 of version 1 (music, silence or sound may accompany the dance work) has been removed because redundant.  This will be one of the technical choices.

 

AS90595 (3.2), Perform a solo or duet dance work to an audience

·        Title

To an audience has been removed from the title because it is the quality of the performance itself that is being assessed, not the context of the performance.

 

·        Achievement criteria

The first achievement criterion has been subsumed by the second criterion.

The second achievement criterion has been amended to reflect the standard required at Level 3.

Use of has been added into the second criterion to be consistent with the wording in AS90596, Dance 3.3.

 

·        Explanatory notes

Explanatory Note 4 has been amended to allow students to perform their own choreography.

Explanatory Note 7 has been amended to clarify the presentation requirements and the expected quality of the performance of the dance work.

Explanatory Note 8 has been amended to remove redundant wording.

A new explanatory note (Explanatory Note 9) has been added to define the term choreographic intention.

Explanatory Note 11 (version 1 Explanatory Note 10) has been amended by adding the words as manipulated by the dancers to clarify the intention.

The final explanatory note (Explanatory Note 14) has been amended to clarify the definition of projection.

 

AS90596 (3.3), Perform in a choreographed group dance work to an audience

·        Title

To an audience has been removed from the title because it is the quality of the performance itself that is being assessed, not the context of the performance.

 

·        Achievement criteria

The four achievement criteria for each grade of achievement have been reduced to three, by combining the first two criteria, and the first achievement criterion has been amended to reflect the standard required at Level 3.

The second criterion has been amended for consistency with AS90595, Dance 3.2.

The third criterion has been amended to focus on the skills required when performing in a group.

 

·        Explanatory notes

Explanatory Note 4 has been amended to allow students to perform their own choreography.

Explanatory Note 7 has been amended to clarify the presentation requirements and the quality of the performance of the dance work.

Explanatory Notes 8 and 10 (Explanatory Notes 7 and 9 of version 1) have been amended to remove redundant wording.

A new explanatory note (Explanatory Note 9) has been added to define the term choreographic intention.

Explanatory Note 11 (Explanatory Note 10 of version 1) has been amended by adding the words as manipulated by the dancers.

Explanatory Note 14 has been amended to clarify the definition of projection.

Explanatory Note 15 has been amended to define the term ensemble skills.

 

AS90597 (3.4), Critically analyse a dance performance

·        Title

The title has been changed to facilitate assessment.

 

·        Achievement criteria

The achievement criteria have been changed to match the reviewed title.

 

·        Explanatory notes

Redundant wording has been removed from Explanatory Note 2.

Two additional explanatory notes (Explanatory Notes 3 and 4) have been added to differentiate between the criteria for achievement with merit and achievement with excellence, and to clarify the expectations for each grade.

The last explanatory note (Explanatory Note 5) has been amended to clarify the requirements for assessment.

 

AS90598 (3.5), Demonstrate knowledge of dance in Aotearoa/New Zealand

·        Title

The title has been changed to better reflect the achievement criteria and to clarify the overall outcome of the standard.

 

·        Achievement criteria

The achievement criteria have been changed to broaden the possibilities for assessment and provide more opportunity for students to demonstrate relevant knowledge.

 

·        Explanatory notes

Explanatory Notes 2, 3 and 4 have been added to and amended to define key words and clarify the requirements of the achievement criteria.

Explanatory Notes 5 and 6 have been added to differentiate between the criteria for achievement with merit and achievement with excellence, and to clarify the expectations for each grade.
