Revision of Animal Care qualification

National Certificate in Animal Care [Ref: 0241]

NZQA's National Qualifications Services (NQS) has completed the revision of the qualification listed above that was reviewed and re-registered in December 2005.

Date new version published                        April 2006

The review of this qualification is planned to take place in                        2010

Reason for the revision

Changes made to the rules of the elective section at review resulted in the need for candidates to choose more 'monitoring health and providing husbandry' standards than was intended.  The intention of the sector was that all candidates would choose at least three of those standards, one of which had to be cats or dogs.  However, the structure of Elective A meant that if candidates wanted to choose both cats and dogs they were required to choose two further 'monitoring' standards to meet the seven credit requirement for Set 2.

Main changes resulting from the revision

This revision has amended the structure of Elective A.  This will allow candidates to choose standards for both cats and dogs and at least one other, or to choose a standard for one of cats or dogs, and standards for at least two others.

Changes to structure and content

·      Standards 5148 and 7337 have been added to Set 2 of Elective A.

·      Title and classification of standard 11831 has been updated.

·      Purpose statement has been updated.

There are no transition consequences resulting from this change.  People currently enrolled in programmes leading to the award of earlier versions of this qualification may either complete that version or transfer to version 6.  Providers are encouraged to offer programmes leading to award of version 6 from January 2007.
