Date new versions published April 2006
Planned review date December 2009
Summary of review and consultation process
The Tikanga unit standards have been reviewed as a part of the Māori Qualifications Services review cycle.
The main purpose of the review was to ensure that the unit standards were still fit for purpose and applicable to current issues.
The 'intention to review' letter was sent out to Whakaruruhau members and Tikanga providers informing them that a review of the Tikanga unit standards in all domains in Level 3-8 was about to begin, and inviting expressions of interest and feedback on the unit standards.
A Whakaruruhau hui was held at the Kingsgate Hotel in Wellington on 6 and 7 of September, and 32 unit standards in the Tikanga Issues and Tikanga Practices domain were reviewed.
Unit standards 16156 and 16157 were reviewed together with unit standards in the Tikanga subfield. These two unit standards required further development to ensure they met the criteria for registration. The new versions of the remaining unit standards were re-registered in June 2005.
Main changes resulting from the review
· Changes have been made to titles, purpose statements, special notes, elements, and performance criteria to clarify requirements.
· Entry requirements have been added to ensure the learner has a suitable level of understanding of te reo Māori and tikanga in order to achieve success at the higher level.
· Due to the request of a number of providers to review the credit values of the Tikanga unit standards, the credit values have been increased to better reflect the time needed in order for the learner to fully grasp the concepts within the unit standards.
· A research component has been added to the elements and performance criteria of unit standard 16156 to ensure the unit standard complies with the descriptors for Level 8.
