The next qualification review is planned to take place during 2009.

Summary of review and consultation process

This review is a part of a major review of motor industry and industrial textile fabrication qualifications (QReview) conducted by NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation (MITO).

The QReview Steering Group endorsed this qualification after major consultation was carried out covering a wide range of stakeholders.  This new certificate is part of an overall review, which is not yet completed, of the Motor Industry qualifications.

Main changes resulting from the review

The National Certificate in Motor Industry (Entry to Automotive Trades) [Ref: 0017] and the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Entry to Motor Body Trades) [Ref: 0018] have been amalgamated and replaced by a single qualification:

·        National Certificate in Motor Industry (Entry Skills) (Level 2) with strands in Automotive Electrical and Mechanical, and Collision Repair [Ref: 1252]

This new qualification has a structure comprising core compulsory and elective unit standards and two strands; the replaced certificates had only compulsory unit standards.  The strands allow for choice between different sectors of the motor industry.  MITO unit standards have been updated to the latest versions or replacements and the credit total has decreased from 84 [Ref: 0017] and 94 [Ref: 0018] to 80 credits.

Transition

People currently working towards the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Entry to Automotive Trades) [Ref: 0017] or the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Entry to Motor Body Trades) [Ref: 0018] may either complete those requirements to be eligible for the issue of a National Certificate within the timeframes specified below or transfer to this qualification.

Industry will continue to recognise the former qualifications, and there should be no need to 'upgrade' by those who have already achieved one.

Programmes leading to the new qualification are being introduced during 2007.  Trainees may either complete the replaced qualifications prior to December 2010 or transfer to the new qualification with the specified exemptions.  The last date for entry to courses or training programmes leading to the replaced qualifications is December 2007.

This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards.  For the purpose of this qualification people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards.
