Forest Industries Training and Educational Council (FITEC) has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.

Date new version published                        December 2006

Planned review date                        December 2011

Summary of review and consultation process

While the unit standards in the Chainsaw Operating domain (6916, 6917, 6919, and 43) were designed for use within a commercial forestry environment, they have had much larger application outside the industry.  This range of operating environments has raised concerns around assessment, health, and safety.  A commercial forest is a unique operating environment for chainsaw users with hazard concerns that are not applicable in other environments.

In order to better address health and safety concerns around chainsaw operation within various environments a decision was made to review the four chainsaw unit standards.  A decision was made to develop separate chainsaw unit standards for workers in a commercial forestry environment and workers in other industries.  The existing unit standards 6917 and 43 will be modified to remove the reference to a commercial forestry environment and are being reviewed through wider industry consultation process.  The reviewed unit standards will be moved to the new Non Commercial Forestry Skills domain.

Unit standard 6916 is specific for trainees within a commercial forestry environment and has been reviewed.  A new unit standard, 23411 has also been developed focused on the use and maintenance of chainsaws within a commercial forestry environment.

Main changes resulting from the review

Unit standard 6916 has been reviewed to ensure that it meets industry needs.  Only minor changes have been made.

·        The title has been changed slightly to reflect industry terminology of the Approved Code of Practice rather than the Code of Practice.

·        Reference to the Code of Practice has been changed to the Approved Code of Practice throughout.

·        Some range statements and wording within some performance criteria have been modified.

·        The unit standard has been moved to the new domain, Forest Landing Operations.

·        A new unit standard, 23411, has been written for the use and maintenance of chainsaws within a commercial forestry environment.

Impact on existing provider accreditations

Providers with accreditation for unit standard 6916 will retain accreditation for this unit standard.  Providers with accreditation for the domain Chainsaw Operating will have their accreditation extended to the domain Non Commercial Forestry Skills and to the unit standard 6916 in its new classification of Forest Landing Operations.  FITEC's Quality Manager is working with providers to ensure that they gain the relevant accreditation for the commercial forestry and non commercial forestry chainsaw unit standards.
