Revision of Electricity Supply qualification
National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Thermal Operator) (Level 4) with strands in Thermal Operations, Combined Cycle Operations, and Geothermal Operations [Ref: 0894]
The Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation (ESITO) has revised the qualification above.
Date new version published December 2006
The next qualification review is planned to take place during 2011.
Reason for the revision
The above qualification was reviewed in May 2006 as part of a larger review and reclassification of the Electricity Supply subfield. Unit standard 18422 was incorporated into this qualification, however it did not sufficiently cover the knowledge and skills needed within the electricity supply environment. For this reason, ESITO deemed it necessary to develop a unit standard specifically for electricity generation power stations. ESITO now wishes to substitute unit standard 18422 with the new unit standard 23409.
Main changes resulting from the revision
This qualification has been revised in order to substitute unit standard 18422, a unit specific to the petrochemical sector, with the new unit standard 23409 that covers the use of a Distributed Control System (DCS) in an electricity generation power station.
Changes to structure and content
· Credit requirements have been increased from 101-132 to 101-134.
· Unit standard 18422 was removed from the Thermal Operations Strand Elective, Combined Cycle Operations Strand Compulsory and Geothermal Operations Strand Compulsory, and replaced with unit standard 23409.
Transition
All existing candidates may complete version 1 of the qualification by December 2010, or transfer their existing achievements to version 3. No candidates have signed on to version 2 of this qualification. All new candidates will be signed on to version 3 of this qualification.
It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements. However, candidates may appeal in the first instance to the Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation, which will consider any appeal on a case by case basis.
