Forest Industries Training and Education Council (FITEC) has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.

Date new versions published                        December 2006

Planned review date                        December 2011

Summary of review and consultation process

The unit standards in Sawmilling, Wood Technology, and Wood Product Manufacturing were circulated to the respective advisory groups for comment and modifications prior to the qualification advisory group meetings held between February and May 2006.  There has been limited assessment against these unit standards during the time of their current registration.  The reason for this has been identified as issues with the present qualification structure, rather than with the unit standards themselves.

The respective advisory groups have made minor modifications to credit values to more accurately reflect the time taken for delivery, learning, and assessment in this sector of the industry.  The Wood Technology unit standards have been reworded to include a broader scope of industries in wood manufacturing.

The Solid Wood Processing advisory group has endorsed the changes made to these unit standards.

Main changes resulting from the review

The review process has resulted in the following changes.

·          Unit standard 20027 has been moved from the Wood Technology domain to the new Wood Product Manufacturing Skills domain.

·          Unit standards 19794 and 19795 have been moved from the Wood Technology domain to the new Wood Manufacturing Foundation Skills domain.

·          Unit standards in the Sawmilling domain have been moved to the new Pole and Post Manufacturing domain.

·          Unit standards in the Wood Product Manufacturing domain have been moved to the new Wood Product Manufacturing Skills domain.

·          Credits have been amended for some unit standards to more accurately reflect the time taken for delivery, learning, and assessment in this sector of the industry.

·          Unit standards have been updated to meet current NZQA registration criteria.

·          Terminology has been standardised to match that used in the new subfields and domains.

Impact on existing provider accreditations

FITEC have undertaken a reorganisation of their classifications and have determined that it is not appropriate for subfield to subfield extensions to occur in the cases below, due to the expanded coverage of the new subfields.  In all cases the domains listed are aligned with the previous subfield coverage.

As many of the new domain names are the same as the previous classifications the table shows the Subfield > Domain format to distinguish between them.
