Forest Industries Training and Education Council (FITEC) has completed the review of the unit standards listed above that were last registered in March1999 following their review.
Date new versions published July 2006
Planned review date December 2011
Summary of review and consultation process
Unit standards in the Wood Panels Manufacturing subfield were reviewed in 2004 and re registered in 2005. Members for the Veneer Manufacturing domain expert panel were unavailable until November 2004. As a result, this group has now completed the review of the Veneer Manufacturing domain unit standards in conjunction with the development of new qualifications for the industry.
An advisory group met to review the current unit standards and determined that their sector of the industry was not as well advanced in terms of training culture. The unit standards needed to be simplified to reflect the current level of training and competency in their sector. As a result the unit standards have been redrafted to better meet the needs of this sector of the wood panels industry. Panel members for the Wood Panels Sector Advisory Group have endorsed the final drafts of the reviewed unit standards.
Main changes resulting from the review
The review process has resulted in the following changes.
· Unit standards 731-734 have been moved to a new Veneer Slicing Operations domain in the new Solid Wood Manufacturing subfield.
· Credits amended for some unit standards to more accurately reflect the time taken for delivery, learning, and assessment in this sector of the industry.
· Levels amended for some unit standards to more accurately reflect the knowledge and skill level of the outcomes.
· Unit standards updated to incorporate feedback on the complexity required by industry. Unit standards updated to meet current NZQA registration criteria.
· Special notes have been improved and updated.
· Five new unit standards have been developed to fill gaps in industry specific areas.
· Unit standard 735 was considered no longer fit for purpose. This will expire and not be replaced.
Unit standard 735, designated as category D, expires at the end of December 2008.
