Revision of Forestry qualification

National Certificate in Forestry (Log Making) [Ref: 0832]

The Forest Industries Training and Education Council (FITEC) has revised the qualification listed above that was registered in October 2004.

Date new versions published                        July 2006

Planned review date                        December 2006

Reason for the revision

Certain crews within the forestry industry were facing significant difficulty in completing this qualification due to the requirements of Elective 1.  Some sites do not have access to machinery-based log making and the employees are not required to scale logs.  As such the only unit standard that is applicable to these crews is Unit 19766, Manage the log making and processing activities on the landing, which on its own does not meet the total credit requirement for the elective.

While the qualification is being reviewed as part of FITEC’s full review of all forestry and wood manufacturing qualifications it was decided that this would be too great a period of delay and that it presented a significant barrier to completion for candidates enrolled in the existing qualification.  The affected candidates are expected to complete the existing qualification before the new qualifications are due to come online and thus the revision was deemed necessary.

Main changes resulting from the revision

Changes to structure and content

·        Elective 1 has been reduced from 20 credits to 15 credits.

·        Unit standards 6916, 6917, 7108, and 4098 have been added to Elective 1 to increase the options available to candidates.

Transition

Candidates that are part way through version 1 or 2 of this qualification can elect to complete that version or transfer their results to version 3.

As the only changes to the qualification have been to increase the choice within elective one and to reduce the credit value of elective one it is not envisaged that any candidate would be disadvantaged by the changes.  If any candidate does feel disadvantaged they can, in the first instance, contact FITEC at feedback@fitec.org.nz.
