Revision of Carpentry qualification

National Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4) [Ref: 0016]

The Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) has revised the above qualification.

Date new version published                                                             June 2006

The next qualification review is planned to take place during 2006.

Reason for the revision

Standards 20887, 20888, 20889, 20890, 20892 and 20893, that cover steel framing skills, were added to the qualification in August 2005 as a response to a growing industry in steel framed building.  Although these standards recognise important skills, their inclusion in the Elective B set affected the original design and intent of the qualification.

It has been decided to remove the standards from the qualification until a full review is completed.  Industry and the BCITO will work together to find a suitable way for them to be included in the qualification.  This will be carried out in 2006.

Version 8 of the qualification is therefore withdrawn.

No candidates had been signed into version 8.  BCITO training advisors and providers are aware of the issues with version 8 and are working with BCITO to ensure that version 9 is utilised to meet the needs of industry.

The revision also takes account of the changed titles and credits for reviewed Specialist Interiors standards 4346 and 6155.

Main changes resulting from the revision

·               Standards 20887, 20888, 20889, 20890, 20892 and 20893 removed from Elective List B

·               Total minimum credits increased from 284 to 290 as a result (fewer lower-credit standards are available to choose from in Elective B)

·               Titles and credits updated for reviewed standards 4346 and 6155 in Elective B

·               Qualification issued as version 9.

Transition

Version 8 of the qualification has been withdrawn and will not be awarded.

People currently working towards version 7 or version 5 may choose to complete that version or transfer their results to version 9.  Please note that standard 21211 was added to the compulsory section of version 8 and this standard must still be completed for version 9.

The last date for award of version 7 is 31 December 2010.  The last date for award of version 5 is 31 December 2006.  Versions 1 to 4 have passed their final award date.

Publicity

Publicity for the revised qualification is being carried out through industry advisory groups and direct contact with providers as appropriate.

Appeals

It is the intention of the BCITO that no existing candidate is disadvantaged by these transition arrangements.  Any person who considers they have been disadvantaged is requested to contact the BCITO.
