National Certificate in Pork Production (Grower Unit Manager) (Level 4) [Ref: 1236]
Date new versions published March 2006
The review was undertaken because the qualifications had passed their anticipated review dates. Changes were required as a result of the review of Pork Production standards carried out in 2005, and feedback had indicated that changes were required to the content and structure of the qualifications to meet the current industry requirements.
The consultation process was carried out concurrently with the review of standards, and included consultation with representatives from industry sectors such as indoor operations, outdoor operations, and grower units; training providers; and interviews with individual industry representatives.
Draft qualifications were developed, taking into consideration feedback from industry meetings and individual interviews, and were distributed to the wider pork industry for suggestions and feedback.
A new qualification for grower unit managers was developed as a result of the industry feedback, as this is a growing sector of the pork industry, and there is a need to recognise the skills and knowledge required for this role. Grower units are concerned only with finishing pigs and the standards in the qualification reflect this.
Final draft qualifications were then endorsed by the Agriculture Industry Training Organisation Pork Industry Committee.

National Certificate in Pork Production (Grower Unit Manager) (Level 4) [Ref: 1236]
This is a new qualification, however the qualification has a relationship with National Certificate in Pork Production (Herd Manager) (Level 4) [Ref: 0098] because there are standards common to both qualifications.
The qualification is designed for candidates who manage pork grower units and are therefore concerned only with finishing pigs from weaning by managing their feed and health to achieve optimum growth rates for subsequent sale, whereas herd managers are concerned with breeding operations and their responsibilities involve the husbandry, breeding, and care of sows, boars, and piglets up to weaning.
This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards.
