Sport, Fitness and Recreation Industry Training Organisation Limited (Sfrito) has completed the review of the unit standards listed above that were registered in May 1997 and August 1999.
Date new versions published May 2006
Planned review date December 2011
Summary of review and consultation process
Throughout 2004 and 2005, Sfrito completed a review of the sport sector unit standards and qualifications involving several sector advisory group meetings and expert panel consultation rounds. As a result of this broader review and subsequent discussions with Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) and several National Sporting Organisations, the new unit standards in beginner level coaching were developed.
These unit standards have been found to better represent the coach education framework being developed by SPARC and the beginner level coaching approach being employed by leading National Sporting Organisations. Previously, the unit standards in this area were disjointed and duplicated some skill sets. This new suite of beginner level coaching unit standards consolidates the skills within this area and defines a cluster of competencies necessary for effective beginner level coaching. The split of the unit standards into 'scene setting' and 'task based' competencies also allows their more efficient application within the sector.
Main changes resulting from the review
· The planning and conducting components of a coaching session are assessed separately in practice, so it was decided to split them into two separate standards. The distinction drawn between 'novice' and 'basic' coaching sessions was inaccurate, as they both cover essentially 'beginner level' skills. It was also felt that the level assigned to 16788 was too low, so the two replacements are both set at level 3.
· Unit standards 5361 and 16788 have been replaced by unit standards 22768 and 22771.
· Two other coaching standards have been developed at level 2: 22769 and 22770.
Unit standards categorised as category C expire at the end of December 2008.
