Summary of review and consultation process

This review was part of the planned cycle of review for achievement standards and was informed by feedback from secondary schools, advisers, moderators, and examiners.  Feedback from this full consultation has informed the changes described below.

Main changes resulting from the review

AS90276 Media Studies 2.1

Criteria

·        The criteria have been reduced from 3 to 1 with the focus of the achievement standard being tightened on the relationship between the product and its audience.  It was felt by the Subject Writing Group (SWG) that the standard was too wide in scope and that depth was suffering because of too broad a coverage.  The single criterion is supported by explanatory notes (ENs), which establish the range of influences to be considered.  Both the criteria that have been removed were the same at all levels of achievement and the achievement standard maintains the same level of difficulty as before.

·        Specific audience was changed to target audience to better reflect the process of identifying the relationship between audience and product.

Explanatory Notes

·        EN1 has been changed to include the range of factors that influence the relationship.  This note provides clarification around the sort of identification/measurement that can be used, the techniques that should be considered, and other factors that influence the relationship.

·        EN3 has been changed from specific audience to target audience to better reflect the intention of the achievement standard and to align with changes to the criteria.  The notion of appeal has been added to clarify the process of targeting.

·        The original EN4 has been expanded into the new EN1.

·        The original ENs 5 and 6 have become the new ENs 4 and 5.
