The Ministry of Education and the Secondary Education Group Assessment business unit of NZQA have developed the achievement standards listed above.
Registration date November 2006
Planned review date February 2010
Summary of development and consultation process
This development was part of the planned cycle for introducing Mathematics achievement standards in association with the Computer Algebraic Systems (CAS) Pilot Project. This project is investigating new ways of teaching Mathematics and has implications for assessment of student achievement in Mathematics. The development was informed by consultation and subsequent feedback from secondary schools, advisers, moderators, and examiners.
Results of development
Two new achievement standards in which students will be permitted to use CAS technology have been developed. The use of this technology is currently not permitted in the other externally assessed Mathematics achievement standards.
· AS90799 CAS Mathematics 1.1, Demonstrate an understanding of straightforward algebraic strategies
This achievement standard is parallel to AS90147, Mathematics 1.1. To align with the use of CAS technology the emphasis is on demonstrating an understanding of straightforward algebraic methods rather than the use of straightforward algebraic methods, as in AS90147.
· AS90800 CAS Mathematics 1.2, Demonstrate an understanding of the features of graphs
This achievement standard is parallel to AS90148, Mathematics 1.2. As CAS technology can sketch the graphs the emphasis is on demonstrating an understanding of features of graphs rather than on sketching graphs, as in AS90148.
Impact on Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP)
These achievement standards will be added to AMAP 0226.
Impact of changes on NCEA Exclusions List
AS90799 will be mutually exclusive with AS90147.
AS90800 will be mutually exclusive with AS90148.
