Competenz has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.

Date new versions published                        October 2006

Planned review date                        December 2011

Summary of review and consultation process

All of the unit standards in the Fire Detection and Alarm Systems domain were reviewed in preparation for a review of the National Certificate in Fire Detection and Alarm Systems (Testing) Level 3, the National Certificate in Fire Detection and Alarm Systems (Level 4), and the National Diploma in Fire Detection and Alarm Systems (Level 5) during 2007.

Due to changes to Regulations and New Zealand Standards, the number of unit standards in the Fire Detection and Alarm Systems domain has been reduced from 30 to 10.

Consideration was given to comments received prior to February 2006 from industry representatives, assessors, and training providers regarding whether the unit standards were fit for purpose.  During 2005 and 2006 all known assessors, providers, and engineering advisory groups were contacted regarding any further input.  In preparation for the review of qualifications, ten new unit standards were developed, and comments similarly invited.  A panel of experts reviewed all comments, and the unit standards were edited accordingly.  The reviewed unit standards were endorsed by Competenz in May 2006.

Main changes resulting from the review

·          The 30 existing unit standards in the Fire Detection and Alarm Systems domain have been replaced with 10 new unit standards.

·          Special notes have been improved and style harmonised with other standards recently registered or under review in the Mechanical Engineering subfield.

·          Range statements, prerequisites, definitions, and other assessment parameters have been updated.

·          All unit standards have been aligned with current New Zealand Regulations and Standards.

·          Elements and performance criteria have been harmonised across related standards, and language improved.

·          Unit standards 9397, 9399, and 10923 have been designated expiring, as they are no longer required by the industry.

·          Knowledge assessments have been concentrated into unit standards 23258, 23259, and 23266.

Unit standards categorised as category C or D expire at the end of December 2010.
