The Sport Fitness Recreation Industry Training Organisation (Sfrito) has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.

Date new versions published                        October 2006

Planned review date                        December 2011

Summary of review and consultation process

As a result of the development and diversification of the personal training role, a review of the personal training unit standards and qualification was undertaken, commencing in 2003.

Initially a national expert panel was called and the matrix of qualifications available in the Fitness domain, including the National Certificate in Fitness (Level 4) with strands in Group Fitness Instruction, Individual Fitness Instruction, and Personal Training [Ref: 0448], was critiqued.  Findings from that meeting and a subsequent meeting established the need for changes to both the personal training unit standards and qualification.

The skills and tasks required within personal training were not only technically advanced in the area of fitness but also involved independent small business and entrepreneurial skills.  For this reason it was felt that the unit standards should reflect the analytical and independent nature of the thought required to be a successful personal trainer.

Regional review meetings were held and the unit standards and qualification were redesigned to better represent the tasks and skill sets required by industry.  Subsequently the work produced was circulated to a wider industry group for feedback and some further refinement was accomplished.

Unit standards 7062 and 7063 were no longer suitable for use in the area of personal training as they did not adequately cover the competencies required in New Zealand to effectively build and maintain a personal training business.  As a result, these unit standards have been designated expiring (category D).

Main changes resulting from the review

·        Unit standards 7062 and 7063 have been designated as category D.  They will expire and not be replaced.

·        Four new unit standards have been registered to more adequately cover the competencies required by industry (see table below).

Unit standards categorised as category D expire at the end of December 2010.
