Summary of review and consultation process

This review was part of a planned review cycle.  Feedback was received from the secondary sector and from the moderation and examination systems.  National consultation on the standards has resulted in the proposed changes.

Main changes resulting from the review

The definitions for identify and explain have been altered for clarity in AS90143, AS90144, AS90146, AS 90747, and AS90748.

In AS90143, describe a way in the third criterion for achievement has been changed to identify ways for consistency of wording across the three descriptors. To clarify the intent of the standard, minor changes have been made to the purpose statement.  It has been altered from, 'focuses on understanding' to 'involves identification of' cultural influences involved in food choices. To further clarify the focus of the achievement standard, 'of another culture' has been replaced by 'across cultures' within the purpose statement and first achievement criterion for all grades.

For AS90144, to clarify the intent of the standard, a minor change has been made to the purpose statement. It has been altered from 'focuses on identifying' to 'involves identification'.  The purpose statement has also been altered from 'developing' to 'carrying out' an action plan to better align with the achievement criteria.

In AS90146, shape has been replaced by affect in the first criterion for achievement because the meaning of shape is unclear.  May has been deleted from the second criterion, and can from the third criterion as they are redundant. To clarify the intent of the standard a minor change has been made to the purpose statement. It has been altered from 'focuses on identifying' to 'involves identification of' societal influences.  To maintain consistency across curriculum areas, 'hauroa/wellbeing' has been replaced by 'hauora and/or wellbeing' within the purpose, achievement criteria and explanatory notes.

For AS90747, to focus the intent of the standard, a minor change has been made to the purpose statement.  It has been altered from 'focuses on' to 'involves identification of' the nutritional needs of an individual.  The purpose statement has also been altered to read 'in the preparation and service of a meal', to reflect the full requirements of the fourth achievement criterion at all grades.

In AS90748, the words and nutrition have been removed from the final achievement criterion as they are covered in criteria 2 and 3 and because they create barriers for students to demonstrate achievement with merit and achievement with excellence.
