The Aviation, Tourism and Travel Training Organisation (ATTTO) has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.

Date new versions published                        March 2007

Planned review date                        December 2011

Summary of review and consultation process

The ATTTO carried out the review of the above unit standards following indications from industry that there was a need to standardise the format of the unit standards to comply with the requirements of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).  Therefore, in conjunction with experts from within CAA, a review was initiated by the ATTTO.  The expert panel was selected to determine the skills and knowledge required for the Aircraft Operation domain, discuss whether the existing unit standards were still fit for purpose, and to identify any gaps where further unit standards needed to be developed.

Drafts of new unit standards were circulated, through the expert panel, to wider industry for feedback.  All feedback was considered, and where appropriate, incorporated into the unit standards; the CAA then endorsed these.  The review was used to address issues of currency and accuracy.

This was the first stage of the Aircraft Operation domain review and covered unit standards required for a private pilot's licence.  This review was in preparation for the development of a National Certificate in Aviation (Private Pilot) qualification.

Main changes resulting from the review

The review process has resulted in the following changes to the unit standards:

·        Unit standards 15033 and 15035 have been replaced by a combined technical knowledge and principles of flight unit standard (23431), covering fixed wing, in line with the CAA syllabus.

·        A new rotary wing unit standard (23432) has been developed to complement unit standard 23431.

·        Unit standards 15030-15032, 15034, and 15036 have been replaced to align with the CAA syllabus, to better represent industry requirements.

·        Unit standards 23429 and 23430 have been developed to replace unit standard 16319, to better represent industry requirements.

·        Unit standards 23433, 23434, and 23435 have been developed to better represent industry requirements, and fill gaps in the knowledge and skills base.

Unit standards categorised as category C expire at the end of December 2008.
