Competenz has completed the review of the unit standard listed above.

Date new versions published                        March 2007

Planned review date                        December 2012

Summary of review and consultation process

Unit standard 552 was reviewed as legislation, NZ standards, and industry guidelines had changed since the standard was last reviewed in 2000.

Industry identified a need for a unit standard relating to legislation, standards, and industry guidelines at a lower level and credit value than the current standard; accessible to a greater number of industry groups, and including a broader reference to other compliance issues and guidelines in relation to the manufacture of aluminium joinery products, as well as the focus on installation that was in the current standard.

Industry also considered that the current standard contained unclear performance requirements and that clarification of all the elements and performance criteria was needed to promote consistent assessment.

The consultation included:

1       An Industry Advisory Group established in February 2005 comprising representatives from:

·        Four proprietary systems suppliers - the industry leaders.

·        National Fabricators Group - the main users of the unit standards.

·        Assessors.

·        the Window Association of New Zealand (Inc.) Private Training Establishment.

2       All employers of trainees enrolled in the National Certificates in Architectural Aluminium Joinery Levels 2 and 3.

3       The Joinery Industry Training Organisation and the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation.

4      Members of Competenz Architectural Aluminium Joinery Sector Advisory Group.

The Industry Advisory Group considered the comments from the consultation process at meetings in 2005 and 2006, and approved the replacement unit standard at a meeting on 5 October 2006.

Main changes resulting from the review

Unit standard 552 has been replaced by a new unit standard (23740) with title, purpose, special notes, and performance criteria providing a clearer focus on compliance and industry guidelines in terms of their relevance to aluminium joinery product manufacturing.

Unit standard 552 categorised as category C expires at the end of December 2008.
