Revision of Stevedoring and Ports Industry qualification

 

National Certificate in Stevedoring and Ports Industry (Log Handling and Ship Loading) (Level 3) [Ref: 0934]

 

The Tranzqual ITO has revised the qualification above.

The next qualification review is planned to take place during 2010.

 

Reason for the revision

 

This qualification has been revised to address a barrier to completion for existing candidates.  The qualification was designed to recognise the knowledge and skills of machine operators in a port environment but restricted Elective A to excavator drivers.  Machine operating skills required for marshalling and supplying cargo to ship side also needed to be covered to meet the purpose of the qualification.

 

Two of the three unit standards in Elective A (18951 and 18953) covered skills required by excavator drivers.  Unit standard 6930 has now been moved from Elective B to Elective A to allow trainees to instead complete 12899 and 6930.  One of unit standard 12898 (log handling) or 18952 (excavator operation) is still required for Elective B.

 

In consultation with industry, it was recommended that Elective A be amended to allow a wider range of trainees to achieve the qualification.

 

Tranzqual ITO has taken the opportunity to check the other components and structure of the qualification to ensure the content is still current and still meeting industry requirements.

 

Main changes resulting from the revision

 

Changes to structure and content

·      Unit standard 6930 has moved from Elective B to Elective A

·      Unit standard classifications, titles, credits, and levels have been updated.

 

Transition

 

People currently working towards version 1 of this qualification may either complete the requirements for that version or transfer their results to this new version of the qualification (version 2).

 

It is the intention of the ITO that no existing candidate is disadvantaged by these transition arrangements.  Any person who considers they have been disadvantaged is requested to contact Tranzqual ITO at the address below.
