Te Kaiāwhina Ahumahi Social Services Industry Training Organisation has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.

Date new versions published                                                          November 2007

Planned review date                                                                           December 2012

Summary of review and consultation process

The review of the youth work unit standards came about as a result of the need to improve the standards to better reflect the youth work industry.  The feedback from members of the youth work industry, including providers, youth workers, youth work employers, students, and work place assessors clearly identified the need to improve the standards.

The review has been guided by the requirement to ensure that the appropriate knowledge, skills, and values were focussed on, particularly in light of the Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa.

Te Kaiāwhina Ahumahi began the review process in 2004, and this has involved:

·         focus groups of stakeholders, including education and training providers, youth workers, and employers

·         a review of the outcomes of all moderation activities since the unit standards were registered, and consultation with the National Moderator and Te Kaiaromatawai o Te Motu

·         communications from various stakeholders since the unit standards were first registered

·         consultation with industry experts on specific unit standards.

Main changes resulting from the review

The review process has resulted in the following changes to the unit standards:

·         new titles for some unit standards (for accuracy, consistency, and style)

·         credit changes for some unit standards, largely to correct errors in the original credit decisions

·         level changes for some unit standards, largely to correct errors in the original level decisions

·         addition of Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa special note to most unit standards

·         editing of special notes for format, consistent use of language and concepts, references to resources, removal of redundant special notes, and legislative changes

·         improvement in the specification of elements and performance criteria

·         extensive revisions to formatting of range statements and specifications of evidence for unit standards

·         removal of overlaps between unit standards

·         unit standards that were no longer required by industry have been designated expiring (category D)

·         updating unit standards as required to reflect current practice or legislation.

The review process has more clearly specified the different competencies required at all levels for the practice of youth work.  The review has led to the development of 12 new unit standards to deal with the needs of industry.

Unit standards categorised as category C or D expire at the end of December 2010.
