Reason for the revision

 

The roofing qualifications are being reviewed.  Part of the review involved considering the level, credits and domain of all unit standards within the National Certificate in Roofing (Installer) with strands in Concrete Roof Tiling; Metal Roofing and Cladding; Metal Roof Tiling; Membrane Roofing; Liquid Membrane Roofing; Torch on Membrane Roofing; and Shingle Roofing; and with an optional strand as a Foreperson [Ref: 0375].

 

The consultation process has been undertaken as part of an overall roofing review via the roofing advisory group.

 

Concrete Roof Tiling level and credits

 

The level of the Concrete Roof Tiling unit standards does not reflect that a candidate is required to have developed a concrete roof tiling skill where they have complete responsibility for quantity and quality of output and are capable of applying the tasks without any direction from a supervisor.  These unit standards therefore do not reflect the correct level and credits associated with the importance of the concrete roof tiling tasks and knowledge.

 

It is therefore proposed to increase the unit standards to Level 4 and raise the credit value to reflect the notional learning and assessment time associated with the knowledge and skill of the tasks involved.

 

Domain change

 

The Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying ITO Ltd has two domains on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) relating to the roofing industry: Concrete Roof Tiling and Roofing, sitting under different subfields.  The registered unit standards within these two domains form the basis of the registered National Certificate in Roofing (Installer) with strands [Ref: 0375].

 

As the qualification title indicates there are several roof types but this is not reflected in the domain names.  The domain names suggest there is just roofing and concrete roof tiling.

 

The Concrete Roof Tiling domain currently has five Level 2 unit standards all of which have expired and have not been replaced; ten Level 3 unit standards three of which have expired and have not been replaced; and three Level 4 unit standards.  If left as is, once the expired unit standards are removed from the NQF there will be no unit standards at Levels 1 or 2, seven at Level 3 and three at Level 4 making a total of ten unit standards. Therefore this revision includes changing the classification of the Concrete Roof Tiling unit standards to the Roofing domain.

 

Following the domain change the Concrete Roof Tiling domain will be lapsed.

·      Levels and credits have been increased for some standards to better reflect the skill, learning time, responsibility and difficulty of the tasks involved.
