The Forest Industries Training and Education Council (FITEC) has completed the revision and review of the unit standards listed above.
Date new versions published August 2008
Planned review date December 2011
Summary of revision and review processes
Unit standard 19720 has been revised to include the National Certificate in Finger Jointing [Ref: 1311] in the entry information. This qualification was not registered at the time of the previous registration of this unit standard.
Unit standard 156 was reviewed to focus the content more closely on the principles of international and domestic phytosanitary requirements, following Biosecurity New Zealand's decision to change the procedures and responsibility for the inspection of wood for export. After consultation with stakeholders, it was decided to concentrate the unit on the generic requirements of phytosanitary standards on a wood processing site, and to develop a new unit standard for the more specific aspects of phytosanitary standards for wood and forest produce for export.
In addition FITEC developed two new unit standards for the operation, maintenance, and calibration of scanning equipment used in solid wood manufacturing. The new unit standards are listed in the tables at the end of this report.
Main changes resulting from the revision
Unit standard 19720 has had the National Certificate in Finger Jointing [Ref: 1311] added to the entry information as recommended for entry.
Main changes resulting from the review
The decision was made to concentrate the content of unit standard 156 on the basic phytosanitary requirements of the wood manufacturing site, in particular on the biological attack on wood, and on contamination of wood by other matter or material which may affect processing.
Changes include:
· Reduction in the credit value from 5 to 3.
· Removal of the probable impact of pests and/or disease arriving in New Zealand.
· The removal of reference to international agreements, regulations and legislation.
· The removal of requirements relating to export forest produce.
· The removal of requirements for safeguards against the accidental introduction of overseas pests and diseases.
· The removal of the term 'solid wood' from the title making the unit more relevant to any wood manufacturing site.
Impact on existing provider accreditations
None.
