Review of Masonry qualification
National Certificate in Masonry (Bricklaying) with strands in Brick and Block Laying, and Refractory Installation [Ref: 0454]
|
This review report was republished in November 2008.
The expiring qualification included expired Unit 629, Select and use adhesives and sealants in construction work, in Elective List 2. This created difficulties for trainees who were working towards the qualification and required skills relating to adhesives and sealants in construction work.
The qualification transition arrangements were therefore revised to include an exemption from 629 for holders of Unit 13028, Demonstrate knowledge of adhesives and sealants in construction work, and Unit 13064, Use adhesives and sealants for construction work on site.
The exemption has been added so that the qualification can be achieved until it reaches its expiry date of December 2010. |
The New Zealand Painting Contractors Association of Employers Industry Training Organisation has completed the review of the qualification listed above.

Summary of review and consultation process
The qualification has been reviewed as a result of a review of the unit standards in both the Refractory Installation domain and the Brick and Block Laying domain. The review resulted in a request from the industry advisory groups to split the current qualification into two separate qualifications to better meet industry's requirements. This has resulted in a new Brick and Block Laying qualification at level 4 and a new Refractory Installation qualification at level 3.
The credit total in the new Brick and Block Laying qualification has increased as a result of the addition of new unit standards which were developed to reflect training which had been provided but was not assessed for award of the replaced qualification. Candidates undertaking training leading to award of the replaced qualification were receiving training for which no credits were available.
The new Refractory Installation qualification includes only compulsory standards to align with the structured method of training required by the industry.
