Review of Motor Industry qualification

National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Technical Supervision) [Ref: 0677]

The NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation (Inc) (MITO) has completed the review of the qualification above.

Date new version published                                                             July 2008

Summary of review and consultation process

The review of this qualification was part of a major review of the motor industry and outdoor fabric product qualifications (QReview) conducted by MITO from 2004 to 2007.  The entire QReview process has been overseen by the QReview Steering Group, who developed review processes and principles to be followed by the Advisory Groups formed for each industry sector, and have given final endorsement to the new and reviewed standards and qualifications.

Initial meetings of the Steering Group identified the need for a clearer career pathway for people already in, and those entering the motor or industrial textile fabrication industries.  This led to a more coherent relationship being formed between all of MITO's qualifications through the creation of common cores with strands, and separation into a progression of qualification levels.

As a part of the development of the career pathway, the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Technical Supervision) [Ref: 0677] (which had had no uptake since it was first registered) was considered, however it was identified that there was a need for separate generic supervisory and industry specific technical qualifications at a higher level.  This led to the development of the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Advanced Technical) (Level 5) with strands in Automotive Electrical and Mechanical, and Collision Repair [Ref: 1143] which has had significant uptake since it was introduced in 2005, and the endorsement of the National Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4) [Ref: 0649] as an appropriate generic supervisory qualification for all of MITO's industry sectors.

Main changes resulting from the review

The National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Technical Supervision) [Ref: 0677] is no longer required.  This qualification will expire and not be replaced.
