Review of Seafood Vessel Operations qualification

The Seafood Industry Training Organisation has completed the review of the qualification listed above.

The next qualification review is planned to take place during 2013.
Summary of review and consultation process
This qualification has been reviewed to ensure it meets the current needs of the industry and to recognise the knowledge and skills required for a number of different roles of seafood harvesters operating small vessels in the in-shore fishery and also for those aboard large vessels at sea and for people managing vessels from ashore.
Review meetings with the Seafood Vessel Operations advisory group, industry representatives, companies, and providers were held and resulted in several changes to this qualification. These changes were implemented to better reflect the requirements of a number of various seafood harvesters across the industry.

Changes to structure and content
· Title changed to reflect the fact that the qualification was not intended solely for people working small vessels, but also to include those working on larger vessels and those involved in management from ashore.
· Purpose statement updated to better reflect the target groups for the qualification.
· Elective 1 has been expanded with the addition of standards 497 (Occupational Health and Safety Practice); 6400, 6401 and 6402 (Core Health); and 19877, 20168, 22748 (Seafood Vessel Operations).
· Elective 2 has been expanded with the addition of the subfield Business Operations and Development.
· The credit requirements for Elective 1 have increased from 14 to 16 credits from the stated standards; and for Elective 2 have reduced from 26 to 24 credits at level 2 or above from the listed subfields.
Transition
People currently working towards version 1 of this qualification may either complete the requirements for that version or transfer their results to this version. The last date for assessments to take place for version 1 is 31 December 2009.
Appeals
It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements. Any person who feels they have been disadvantaged by these transition arrangements can contact the Seafood ITO who will consider appeals on a case-by-case basis.
