The Pharmacy Industry Training Organisation has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.
Date new versions published November 2008
Planned review date December 2013
Summary of review and consultation process
A meeting of the Advisory Group was held on 16 July to discuss feedback from stakeholders, both industry and providers. The stakeholders advised that the content of the unit standards developed as replacements for unit standard 9652 in April 2007 required too much knowledge from candidates for the role of a pharmacy technician and were 'not fit for purpose'. The industry assessors and providers had tried to develop assessment material for the existing unit standards and this had required candidates to collect large amounts of evidence, which was neither feasible nor realistic for the credits assigned.
It was agreed that some of the unit standards would be designated as expiring and five new unit standards would be developed to provide more of a focus on overview. Amendments were made to some of the unit standards, and five new unit standards were developed and endorsed by the stakeholders. As the category D unit standards are 'not fit for purpose' and have not been used, it was decided that they should expire at the end of 2009. It was also agreed to remove the replacement relationships with 9652 from those standards being retained.
Main changes resulting from the review
· Twelve unit standards were designated as expiring.
· Credit totals were increased for unit standards 23658 and 23669.
· Performance criteria were clarified.
· Entry requirements were removed.
· Five new unit standards were developed to provide knowledge of body systems and medicines used in their treatment.
· Unit standards 23657 and 23669 had replacement relationships with 9652 removed.
Unit standards categorised as category D expire at the end of December 2009.
