Summary of review and consultation process

A review of the equine unit standards listed above was required to determine whether the standards remained fit for purpose for a further five years.  The NZ Equine Industry Training Organisation consulted stakeholders, namely industry, sector and moderation groups, and accredited providers, seeking feedback on the effectiveness of unit standards common to all sectors.  An Editorial Committee comprising representatives from harness racing, thoroughbred trainers, breeding sector, equestrian sector, industry tutors, and accredited providers met on 20 June 2007 to consider all submissions.

The review was carried out to ensure that the standards were consistent with industry practices and to draw upon the practical experience gained from assessing and training trainees against the standards.  The review was also aimed at improving the clarity of the standards and removing inconsistencies.

Main changes resulting from the review

·      Changes made to ranges to clarify the parameters for assessment and to reflect individual sector practices.

·      6613 credits increased.

·      19459 credits increased to reflect learning time associated with standards increased requirements.

·      Special note details updated on standards.

·      Entry information prerequisites amended to open to offer students greater flexibility.

·      New unit standard developed for identifying conformation at level 3.

·      New unit standard developed focusing on practical skill of travelling and looking after horses in short-term accommodation.
