Summary of review and consultation process

The Mau Rākau unit standards were reviewed by the Whakaruruhau Māu Rākau at hui in September 2007 and May 2008, as part of the MQS review cycle.  The unit standards are used by a number of providers in the secondary and tertiary sectors.

Main changes resulting from the review

The following changes have been made to the unit standards:

·           performance criteria have been amended

·           titles have been amended to include macrons

·           definitions have been added for clarification

·           a fitness component has been added to all unit standards

·           credits for unit standard 20948 have increased from 2 to 6.  The performance of mau rākau is about the movement of the feet.  To meet the required standard, candidates need to be competent with the footwork involved in mau rākau to block, defend and attack.  The Whakaruruhau have recommended that there be more teaching and learning time for candidates to meet the performance requirements

·           the weaponry used for unit standard 20951 has been changed.  The use of koikoi has been changed to huakau, which has been defined as an undressed, unfashioned staff.  The huakau is more accessible, and is a more practical rākau to use when learning the blocks, the attack and the defensive movements of mau rākau

·           the title of unit standard 20954 has been amended.  The Whakaruruhau decided that performing te taki required consent from iwi and or whare tu taua, therefore the standard requires a candidate to demonstrate knowledge of performing te taki, where te taki is performed in an informal setting.
