Summary of review and consultation process

In 2008 industry approached FITEC suggesting that a review of the National Certificate in Log Scaling (Level 4) [Ref: 1211] was required.  Most log scalers were not able to complete this National Certificate due to the inclusion of standard 6959 covering the calculation of log scaling volume that is carried out by administration or management staff.

FITEC consulted with log scaling companies, speaking to managers, log scalers, trainers and assessors to determine the skill sets required for log scalers.  It was also determined during this consultation that there was a log marshalling activity that was not covered by the existing qualification.

Existing standards within the qualification were reviewed and it was determined that the content of the standards did not need to change.

A draft qualification was developed, circulated to industry, and endorsed.

Main changes resulting from the review

This qualification has been designated as expiring, and a replacement qualification has been registered.  The replacement qualification is at Level 3, and includes a strand in Log Scaling, and a strand in Log Marshalling.
