Summary of review and consultation process

The unit standards listed above were reviewed as part of the Māori Qualifications Services review cycle, to ensure that the standards are fit for purpose and applicable to current issues.

Members of the Whakaruruhau Mana Wahine met to review the standards over three meetings on 23 August 2007, 13 and 14 March 2009 and more recently at a Technical Evaluation meeting held in Auckland on the 12 and 13 June 2009.

MQS and the Whakaruruhau acknowledge the amount of time elapsed from the start of the review to final submission and have worked collaboratively towards a solution-focused approach to addressing identified issues.

As part of the review the Whakaruruhau have added four new standards.  The new standards have been developed to assist in streamlining and ensuring the standards are layered in a manner that will assist learners to pathway to higher level skills and knowledge but exit at any point.  It will also allow the Mana Wahine standards to be utilised by other qualifications such as the National Certificate in Māori (Te Waharoa) (Level 2) [Ref: 0878], while allowing candidates the opportunity to draw from this subfield in a specialist capacity.

Main changes resulting from the review

·           The special notes have been updated to clarify requirements and maintain consistency.

·           Changes to some standard titles, purpose statements, elements and performance criteria were made to add more clarity to the standards.

·           Range statements in some standards were amended to make the assessment load less onerous and increase flexibility of assessment and delivery.

·           Amendments were made to definitions and references in special notes.

·           Macrons were added where applicable.

·           The level for standard 10696 has decreased from 3 to 2; the level for 10704 has decreased from 6 to 5; the level for 10707 has increased from 2 to 3; the level for 10708 has increased from 3 to 4; the level of 10709 has increased from 3 to 5; and the level for 10710 has increased from 5 to 6.

·           The credit value for standard 10696 has decreased from 4 to 2; the credit value for 10701 has decreased from 15 to 9; the credit value for 10704 has decreased from 15 to 10; and the credit value for 10707 has decreased from 10 to 5.
