Summary of review and consultation process

NZHITO, in conjunction with industry representatives, providers and other stakeholders, has reviewed the unit standards within the Arboriculture domain listed above.  This review took place as part of the normal NZHITO unit standard review cycle, the review allowed for moderation issues that had emerged since the last review cycle to be addressed, and allowed for updates and changes to the unit standards.

The review considered the following matters.

·         The currency of the unit standards and their suitability for existing and proposed qualifications.

·         The accuracy and appropriateness of their content to the arboriculture industry.

·         The need to revise special notes, elements, performance criteria and range statements to ensure they were technically correct, up to date and accurately reflected industry practises.

·         Reassessment of credit values to more accurately reflect the time taken for learning and assessment.

The review of these unit standards has also been coordinated with the development of new unit standards for the arboriculture sector.  The review has taken into consideration the time since these unit standards were last reviewed and a review of the National Certificate in Horticulture (Arboriculture) with strands in Ground Worker, Consultant Climber, Transplant Worker, Basic Climber, Advanced Climber, and Utility Worker [Ref: 0896].

Main changes resulting from the review

The review process has resulted in the following changes to the unit standards:

·         The development of three new Arboriculture unit standards.

·         The 26 existing Arboriculture unit standards that were reviewed have, based upon their usage, industry requirements, and relationship to other unit standards in subfield Horticulture had changes made to credits, special notes, elements, and performance criteria.

·         Unit standard 2769 has had an increase in credit value and in level.  Unit standard 17150 has had a decrease in credit value.

·         Unit standard 2818 has been replaced by unit standard 25405.

·         Unit standards 2819 and 2770 have been replaced by unit standard 25404.

·         Unit standard 2822 has been replaced by unit standard 25402.

·         Unit standard 17260 has been replaced by unit standard 25399 and 25401.

Unit standards categorised as category C expire at the end of December 2011.
