Replacement qualifications
National Certificate in Tourism (Tour Guiding) with an optional strand in Extended Tour Guiding [Ref: 1518]
Date new version published December 2009
The next qualification review is planned to take place during 2014.
Summary of review and consultation process
The review of the National Certificate in Tourism (Guiding) with strands in Excursion Guiding, and Attraction Guiding [Ref: 0901] and the National Certificate in Tourism (Tour Leadership) [Ref: 0902] was initiated as part of the standard setting body's scheduled review cycle and in response to industry feedback.
Representatives of the tourism industry were convened in three consultation groups. These groups comprised 21 representatives from New Zealand tourism: coach tour businesses, Māori Tourism operators, the Department of Conservation, The Museum of New Zealand - Te Papa Tongarewa, and ProGuides New Zealand.
The distinction between excursion guiding and attraction guiding was not considered sufficient to justify strands in the replacement qualification. Extended Tour Guiding was deemed a specialised skill for which a strand in the qualification was formed, including the necessary advanced leadership and process skills.
Main changes resulting from the review
The two reviewed qualifications were designated expiring and replaced by the National Certificate in Tourism (Tour Guiding) with an optional strand in Extended Tour Guiding [Ref: 1518].
