Date new versions published February 2009
Planned review date December 2013
Summary of review and consultation process
At the national equine tutor's moderation meeting held in Palmerston North in November 2006, a working party was established to review equitation unit standards to ensure that they continued to meet current trends. The group recognised the need to develop a unit standard which underpinned the history and development of equestrian sports. The resultant unit standard was circulated amongst coaches and endorsed for registration.
A coach development working party was also established and met in May 2007. This group included representatives from Equestrian Sports NZ, Sport and Recreation NZ, and coaches from disciplines within equestrian sports. An analysis of the current needs recommended that: unit standard 16226 be divided into two separate unit standards which drew on the SPARC module ‘Understanding the Athlete'. As a result, two new unit standards were developed: one incorporating the fundamental principles behind coaching, and another reflecting the technique of teaching a rider on a lunge.
The new versions of the unit standards were then circulated for comment to equine tutors involved in the delivery of coaching throughout New Zealand. Resultant feedback was considered and amendments made accordingly, with the final drafts endorsed by the coach development working party.
Main changes resulting from the review
· Unit standard 16226 was replaced by two new unit standards 25671 and 24752
· New unit standards 24751 and 24753 were developed to meet current needs
· A new unit standard 24754 covering the history and development of equestrian sports was developed
· Organisation names, addresses, and contact details were updated.
The unit standard categorised as category C will expire at the end of December 2012.
