Summary of review and consultation process

This set of unit standards was originally written for and used solely by the ambulance sector.  However, over time, usage has broadened into areas where there is greater risk of injury (for example in heavy industry, on oil rigs, or in the fire service) and/or where access to more skilled medical attention is restricted due to isolation.  ETITO consulted widely on the review due to this broad usage, along with the unit standards being a traditional part of the Ambulance qualification pathway.  Other standard setting bodies (SSBs), training providers, industry, and community groups have participated in this review.

Feedback from industry, assessors and moderators on unit standards 14470-14473 was that they were difficult to assess against, time-consuming, and challenging to use.  The review of these unit standards has addressed these issues and ensured that they meet industry requirements, are fit for purpose, and enable consistent assessment and moderation.  As a result, two new unit standards were developed to replace three expiring standards, and one unit standard was updated.

Main changes resulting from the review

·      Unit standards 14470 and 14471, which were level 4, have been replaced by new unit standard 25412 at level 3

·      unit standard 14472, which was level 4, has been replaced by new unit standard 25411, which is level 2

·      unit standard 14473 has changed from level 4 to level 3.

Unit standards categorised as category C expire at the end of December 2011.
