The next qualification review is planned to take place during 2014.

Summary of review and consultation process

This qualification was reviewed in conjunction with a review of infrastructure pipelaying standards to remove barriers to achievement.

InfraTrain New Zealand facilitated a review group incorporating industry representatives, training advisors, and assessors that reviewed the qualification concurrently with reviewing the standards.  The review group considered feedback from industry concerning the need for confined space standards, the essential nature of basic concreting skills, the inappropriateness of some standards, and the need for choice of pipe jointing standards.

InfraTrain New Zealand consulted with the Agriculture Industry Training Organisation, and the Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying ITO Ltd during the review.  A representative from the NZ Extractive Industries Training Organisation joined the review group to ensure that the amended qualification met gas industry requirements for pipelaying and to advise on the proposed new gas industry pipelaying qualifications.

Draft versions of the reviewed qualification were sent out to advisory group members and industry representatives for feedback.  All feedback was considered, and where appropriate, incorporated into the qualification.  The infrastructure pipelaying operations committee endorsed the reviewed qualification.

Main changes resulting from the review

In addition to updating standard details, the review added essential standards to the core compulsory section and optional strand, removed unnecessary standards, and provided more choice in the core elective section.  Core Elective 2 was restructured to provide pathways to this qualification from different industries.
